FGM and Honour Based Abuse

Speaker: Imogen Mellor

Date: Autumn 2023

CRIMINAL

Imogen is a family and immigration practitioner, who further accepts instructions in Public Law and International Human Rights. She specialises in cases concerning clients with severe learning difficulties, mental health conditions and victims of domestic abuse. She is highly adept at dealing with complex cases involving vulnerable clients and their needs. Imogen is currently counsel on a large scale public inquiry and also an Associate Lecturer at Goldsmith’s University.

Imogen begins by outlining various types of FGM as defined by the World Health Organisation, most of which are criminalised in the UK under the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003. In the case of children being subject to FGM, she also explains the ways in which the court may make a care or supervision order and how it is measured whether or not it is considered necessary. She also gives importance advice on how evidence should be gathered and processed, and how to manage taking care of vulnerable clients.
